ALUMNI SPEAKS ON GUIDING EXPERIANCE AT WRANGELL ST. ELIAS NATIONAL PARK, ALASKA.
SUNY Potsdam Wilderness Education program presents “Experience Wrangell St. Elias National Park” featuring Ben LaValley on March 6th at 6:30pm located in Flagg Hall room 206. Come join us as Ben takes us through a slideshow presentation incorporating his recent adventure as a guide in Wrangell St. Elias National Park and his personal adventure to South America where he made a summit bid for Aconcagua. (Tallest peak in the Western Hemisphere) The largest wilderness area in North America, Wrangell St. Elias National Park encompasses 13.2 million acres, an area large enough to contain Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut within it. As a graduate and supporter of the Wilderness Education program at SUNY Potsdam, Ben will speak about his experiences in order to help raise funds for this year’s Leadership Two expedition. This year’s lead two group is planning on going to the Pasayten Wilderness area in Washington.
The skills and experiences Ben gained from the Wilderness Education program have helped mold him into the leader he is today. The Leadership tract of the Wilderness Education minor has given him the hands on experiences and skills necessary to become a leader both in and out of the backcountry. When taking leadership one, a fourteen-day expedition in the Adirondack Park, students must master outdoor living skills in a wilderness setting while working on leadership and group development.  Students are then ready for the Leadership Two experience.  This course involves planning and executing a trip to a wilderness area out west, where students will put into practice their leadership skills and outdoor knowledge in a more difficult terrain setting.
Please come and support the Wilderness Education department as this year’s Leadership Two class continues to raise money for their western expedition.
